Jemima Kirk X Brooklyn Bohemia

The more I learn about Jemima Kirke, the more intrigued I get. My intrigue + my fascination with creative spaces led to the idea for this post; the second instalment of exploration into the homes of the creative and the famous.

(P.S. This post contains a naughty word and boobs)

A few posts back, I wrote about the ridiculously gorgeous New York dream pad (here) that ChloĆ« Sevigny once called home. This time around the focus is on the bohemian goddess Jemima Kirke. You may know Jemima from the HBO TV series GIRLS. If you don't, then I absolutely suggest you get involved because it is incredible. Written and produced by the babe of babes Lena Dunham, GIRLS takes us into the lives of 4 twenty-something women living in New York. Delving into 4 very honest and very real journeys of self discovery- trying to figure out who they are, where they are going and what the heck this world is about. Not in a Sex and the City, sugar-coated glamour kind of way, but in a "Living the dream. One mistake at a time" kind of way.

Jemima plays the stunningly opinionated, unapologetic, bohemian wild child, Jessa. She is the kind of character that you can't tell whether you are in love with, or want to be.

From interviews, it's been said that the gap between the life of Jessa and Jemima is not that far apart. With Kirke explaining that Dunham wrote Jessa's character based on Jemima as they have been close friends since childhood.

Jemima lives in a Brooklyn home with her husband and two children. What I love about her home is that it seems to intrinsically mimic her bold sense of style, with collaborations of vintage furniture, strong colour schemes, lots of art and bohemian detailing.

From my perspective, through these images it seems as though Jemima has decorated and styled her home straight from her heart and mind. She doesn't seem to have followed any uniform or text-book interior design styles. Her design is natural, free and seems almost not consciously thought of.

The detail is unbalanced, scattered and eclectic. She has channeled her inner Jessa and given zero f!#ks to how things are supposed to look, following her own style and creativity in order to put her mark on her home.

I adore Jemima's home as it is an example that we don't always have to go by the book. We don't need to always follow fashions or trends to create a space that is unique to us. Sometimes I think that it is important to step away from trends as they tend to mould us and our thoughts. Don't get me wrong, I follow trends as much as the next person, but I do think it is important to take a step back into your own mind to really understand what you personally like. This is one way an interior space can really become an expression of yourself.

Before the actress, came the artist. Jemima majored in art at the Rhode Island School of Design and has continued to paint ever since.

In an interview with Semaine, Jemima states that on a typical day she can spend up to five hours in her home studio and from the same interview, we are lucky enough to see inside her fortress of creativity...

Her paintings, primarily portraits, encompass the beauty of the female form. With a feminist undertone, exploring the beauty in women of all shapes and sizes. To close this post, I will leave you with three of my most favourite paintings by Jemima and some style notes with how best to recreate this eccentric, personal look...

·     Trend followers- remember to take a step back and focus on what is personal to you, perhaps create a mood board or a Pinterest board and just search images you like, see what you come out with
·     Mix it up, don't be afraid to break conventional interior rules
·     Be expressive, make a collage from photographs or, tear out images from magazines that you love
·     Go on the hunt for interior details in a trend-free escape haven such as in charity shops or at a car boot sale (flea market or thrift shops for you American babes). This will ensure that you won't be lured into Urban Outfitters, whilst being safe and not spending your entire monthly salary in one day- win/win!

Until next time...

(Please note, that these images are not mine, I have sourced the images from various online sources including Google, Pinterest, The glow and Semaine)
